Vineyard & Nantucket Sound features a variety of bottom structure, from sandy shoals to rocky outcropping, making it a haven for bluefish, striped bass, black sea bass, fluke and scup. The water warms up in the middle of summer, making striper fishing difficult, but the abundance of bluefish make this body of water a great place to fish for the entire season from May to October.

If given the choice, the South Side of Cape Cod is a great early season area to play. You have a lot of options in this area in terms of places to hide from bad weather, various terrains and bait sources and plenty of Plan B opportunities if the striper fishing doesn’t pan out in the form or large scup and sea bass in the surrounding areas.

Whether you're fishing for food, bait or just for fun, this fishery is easy to figure out and a great kick off to the season on Cape Cod. On Monday morning, Capt. Mike Hogan and Capt. Larry Backman headed out aboard FV Skipjack to kick off his season by joining a fleet of 100+ boats and test out some of his new squid jigs.
