On days when it’s foggy and hard to see the rips in front of you, finding fish can be difficult and frustrating. But for Capt. Terry Nugent, using his radar to search for clusters of birds has proven overtly effective and landed him legal stripers when others around him can’t seem to find the schools at all.

So how does he do it?

“I use my radar a lot to help find birds,” Nugent said.

Step 1: Tune the radar; turn the sea clutter and the rain clutter to zero

Step 2: Push the gain up – this will help you see “clutter” that would indicate birds

Step 3: Follow the birds and set your lines!
