Great Point Rip #433
Great Point Rip
The Great Point Rip is located off Great Point on Nantucket on the Island’s Northeast Tip. Hailing from Falmouth, I always forget about this spot. While not “close” to Falmouth, it’s about an hour run, less from as you move Eastward ports along the Cape’s South Side. This spot fishes well all season, but I start “remembering” Great Point when the action starts dying down in Vineyard and Nantucket sounds. Great Point holds fish throughout the season due to its proximity to cooler Atlantic water.
A noteworthy point about fishing Great Point Rip to mention here is how shallow the rip can get. Years ago, I inadvertently beached my 25 Mako at slack tide on the sand bar. Fortunately, it was greasy calm that day and used the situation to site cast to some milling stripers, but the situation could have been a much bigger problem in rough seas. Be Careful!
Great point is certainly a cool spot.
Standard Rip fishing here. Watch for surface action from blues and stripers. Bluefish show up in May before the stripers. Striper fishing is the strongest here in June. Work the steep drop off along the northwest side of the rip if not seeing fish cruising in shallow water. Great point serves as a nice combo play for drifting the Nantucket Beaches on the east Side for fluke, and big scup and seabass.
