L’Hommedieu Shoal

L’Hommedieu Shoal is located about “Halfway” between Falmouth and Oak Bluffs and is home to a locally named spot called “Half Way” shoal. I’ll leave it to you to guess why it’s named that!! 

Location (1) is locally known as Halfway Shoal, and is a very popular springtime striper spot. Drift on north side of rip in 15 – 30 feet of water, bottom fish for large fluke. Deep jigging with large metal jigs for large bluefish and occasional stripers. It’s also worth mentioning here that that Halfway is an excellent large scup and sea bass Spot when season opens in May through June.

I often associate L’Hommedieu Shoal and Hedge Fence as a group. You can see how close L’Hommedieu Shoal dips South toward Hedge Fence.  If one of the two spots is holding fish, the other is likely an option too 

I would argue that L’Hommedieu Shoal continues West all the way toward Nobska. Labeling is vague on the chart but for sake of argument, the entire shoal system holds fish, especially in early season. As I edit this post in 2022, I am recalling some phenomenal large stripers here this May keyed in on big bunker and squid. As with any shoal, look for diving birds or surface feeding fish. Stripers in this area in the Spring when squid are present. Bluefish show up soon after, bonito and false albacore later in the summer.

  • Hazards: Few. A fair amount of boat traffic on summer weekends. Wind against a strong tide can produce short, high chop.
