Video Fishing Report: Race Point Stripers – July 1, 2015

Capt. Mike Hogan and Capt. Shaun Ruge of Riptide Charters headed out of Sandwich Marina early on Wednesday morning and steamed directly across the bay to Race Point to check up on the striper bite that has lasted nearly all of June. Despite two busy commercial days already in the books, stripers to 40″ are still in the area chasing tight balls of sand eels, and can be found either on the surface or down deep.

Search around the drop off (you can't miss it on your chartplotter), to find schools of stripers (right) chasing balls of bait (left).

Capt. Shaun recommends trolling along the drop off just off of Race Point and getting your baits deep, marking balls of bait and/or stripers on your electronics before vertical jigging bigger SI Epoxy Jigs, or searching around for birds and breaking fish and casting Hogy Sand Eel softbaits at them.

Vertical jigging in 40-60' of water is also an effective tactic, especially when a scene like this shows up on your depthfinder.

A thunderstorm cut the trip short, but there have also been reports of bluefin in deeper water off The Race, as is often the case this time of year, so be sure to bring your tuna-grade spinning setup and an SI Harness Jig as well!
