The Nantucket Inshore Classic Fishing Tournament kicked off on Sunday, September 11, 2016 and will run through Saturday, October 15. Organized by fishermen for fisherman, the tournament is designed to enable participants to fish when they want and still have a chance to qualify for all of the great prizes that will be available.

If you have been fishing on Nantucket for years or are planning your first visit to the “faraway island”, you should consider entering “the Inshore Classic”. It is a great way to get to know Nantucket and to experience all of the exceptional fishing that is available. Now in its 11th year, the Tournament is available to ALL local and visiting fishermen. The Tournament has grown to over 250 participants which, when combined with support from a long list of loyal sponsors has enabled Tournament organizers to donate thousands of dollars to the Nantucket Anglers Club scholarship fund for deserving Nantucket students.

The Tournament is an individual angler tournament with four divisions: All Tackle, Fly Fishing, Junior (kids under 16 fish for free) and Catch & Release. Species eligible for prizes are Striped Bass, Bluefish, Bonito, and False Albacore. Each division features separate categories for fish caught from the beach or from a boat.

Prizes are awarded for the heaviest combined weight in each division and category. The heaviest fish of each species in each of the four categories also qualifies for a prize. There are weekly prizes as well. In the Catch and Release Division, prizes are awarded based on the longest fish entered of each species.

Tournament participants do not need to attend the closing awards ceremony in order to receive their prizes. Prizes awarded to last year’s winners included rods and reels, tackle, Beach Passes, Charters with local fishing guides, and gift certificates from local restaurants and merchants.

Tournament results are announced daily by E-Mail, Radio, the newspaper, and on-line so participants always know where they are in the standings and the weight of the leading fish in each category. Last year’s notable catches included Beach bass in the high 20’s and Fly Rod Bass around 20 pounds in both the Beach and the Boat categories. A 14.2 pound False Albacore was landed from the beach towards the end of the Tournament as was an 8.7 pound Bonito and a Bluefish that weighed just under 14 pounds.
