Salty Cape reader Chris Junda spent two days targeting stripers off Chatham this weekend and reports some of the best fishing of the summer.
“There has been very good vertical jigging for bass off of the Nauset Beach area recently, primarily in 60-80′ of water. Our best lures have been the 2.5 oz green SI Sand Eel jig and the 3 oz olive SI diamond jig dressed with a green 6” skinny Hogy. The fish are in small pods, usually part way up the water column.
Our usual routine is to go to our usual spots and work it from there. We try different drifts, look for birds and whales, watch the sonar, check how the other boats (if any) are doing and just nose around until we find something. Sometimes we catch fish when nothing is showing on the sonar. Sometimes the pods just light up the screen.
Friday afternoon, 8/28, we caught 8 bass ranging from 25-38″ while fishing from 2-4 pm.
Saturday morning, 8/29, we caught 10 bass with 5 of them 36-40″ fishing from 7:45-10 am.
The best couple tides I have had since back in late June out at Hanky.”
