Offshore Fishing Report – July 28, 2017

Despite the presence of schools of smaller yellowfin and bluefin around the Dump, the Claw, and other spots south of the Vineyard, there has been a fair amount of frustration for boaters using bars and skirted ballyhoo. I have been told that when tuna are on halfbeaks, which they have been recently, you are better off casting to them with jigs and even stickbaits/plugs such as the Shimano Orca and the incredible ones made by Strategic Angler.

Folks fishing south of Nantucket have been enjoying some exciting action on white marlin; the typical approach if you aren’t trolling for them is to use pitch baits such as scup or live eels.

Jim Young at Eastman’s Sport and Tackle in Falmouth reported that there were some big yellowfin being caught last weekend out around Oceanographer Canyon, but what happens to the fishing after this weekend’s blow is anyone’s guess.
