Nantucket Fishing Report – July 14, 2016

Matt Manera from the Nantucket Tackle Center reported that there are schools of bunker (or pogies, as Cape Codders call them, or Atlantic menhaden, their scientific name) around the north side of the island for the first time in a long while and the bluefish are chowing down big time, especially down around Dionis. Since the authorities chased the squid boats out that were illegally fishing around the island, there has been a great deal of squid in the harbor and the bass are eating well.

Southside, there are bass being caught on big white (day) and black (night) soft plastics around Tom Nevers and the airport, while there are still plenty of big bluefish in the rips with some bass mixed in. The waters off Great Point are still producing mainly bluefish, while down off Sankaty in the area known as the Whale’s Tale, they are catching big fluke and good numbers of sea bass.
