There are good numbers of bass in the rips, but generally there have been more chunky, mid-20-inch fish than large ones. Holding on the rip line and drifting squid flies on lead core is working well for spin and conventional anglers, with flyrodders casting and swinging squid flies and poppers and casters doing well on amber, bone, and bubblegum soft plastics, such as the Hogy 10-inch Original. The Hogy Mini Squids would also be a great item to drop back into the rips, twitching and bouncing them in the rip lines.
Bob Lewis also reported that he has been picking up greater numbers of fluke this year while targeting bass with squid flies. Given the enormous doormats that they catch off the east side of Nantucket, there is a very good chance that they are extending their range and feeding heavily on the large number of sand eels and squid in the area.
