Martha’s Vineyard Fishing Report – August 20, 2015

I had the chance to talk with Matt Malowski, a well-known shore guide on the island, and he said fishing for bass is a bit slower, as one would expect in August, but he is still catching fish down around Squibnocket, Gay Head, and on Chappy. Matt’s top choice is the nine-inch Hogy Skinny in black or amber, followed by the translucent green Super Strike Needle and the Daiwa SP Minnow. Matt has also been picking up some nice brown sharks from the south and east facing beaches.

There is really no inshore bonito action to speak of; a few have been caught trolling at Middle Ground, but most bones are around the Hooter where trolling deep diving plugs is best, with blind casting a second choice.

Capawock Charters was able to find the bonito this week.

The excellent squid fishing continues, particularly around Edgartown and Menemsha and there are some butterfish around as well.

Boaters are picking up some bass between Squibnocket and Noman’s, both chunking pogies and trolling spoons or jigs. There are some bluefish in Vineyard Sound, but most folks looking for consistent action on blues are heading to Horseshoe.
