Elizabeth Islands Fishing Report – August 31, 2017

Jim Young at Eastman’s Sport & Tackle on Main Street in Falmouth reported that Capts. John Christian and Mark Gordon have been picking up a number of sellable bass around the islands, including fish up to 30-pounds, on live eels.

The word from Phil Stanton has been pretty much the same, with two to three really good stripers on each of his trips using eels, but he emphasized that he has been fishing right in the middle of the day as opposed to the night tides that many successful island fishermen focus on.

Phil also enjoys trolling and casting plugs and one of his guests caught a big bluefish today using a big swimming plug that imitates a pogy or menhaden. Like most folks who fish the islands on a consistent basis, this is the time of year when it is more common to catch the largest blues of the season, ones that are gnarly and have particularly miserable dispositions.

Finally, during his travels around our local archipelago in the last week or so, Phil has not seen any signs of albies.
