Bottom fishing for sea bass and scup is really good, with the fluke season just getting started. A few larger bass are being caught inside the harbor and along the north shore of the island; early morning and evening have produced the best action.
Corey Gammill from Bill Fisher Tackle reported that the vast majority of the bass that are being caught are on the small side, with an occasional legal fish in the mix. The southside was red hot, particularly around the airport.
The rips are pretty much controlled by the bluefish as the boaters are having a tough time getting to any bass that are there. The Bonito Bar is holding a few fish, but it really hasn’t turned on in a big way yet.
Bass fishing has been best along the southside, particularly Nobadeer (by the airport) and Cisco to the west; this is the time live eels become particularly popular. The fluke bite east of Sankaty continues to be one of the best fisheries on the island.
Great Point has bluefish as well, but if you’re looking for bass, then Six Cans and Rose and Crown are the best spots; trolling plugs and jigging parachute jigs, both tipped with pork rind, have been producing.
