Monomoy Fishing Report – July 20, 2017

The rips have been maddeningly inconsistent, perhaps as a result of widely varying water temperatures from one spot to another. There are still some schools of small bluefish on the sound side of the islands and there is no lack of schoolies on the flats, whether you are just outside Stage Harbor, between North and South Monomoy, or on the west side.

Out at the rips, Handkerchief is apparently producing the most consistent action, but as is the case with all of the rips, the window of good fishing can be frustratingly brief. A changing tide at first light has been the target for many anglers, with squid imitations the preferred lures.

Handkerchief is definitely the one shoal that is producing the best action. I fished Point Rip, Shovelful, and Bearses on Wednesday and seven-inch bubblegum Original Hogy’s worked well, with groups of bass at times competing for the plastic.
